The mines can be a dangerous place, and the dwarves that spend their lives digging up new seams seldom die a natural death. Collapses, poisonous gasses, and the innumerable monsters that dwell in the deep can quickly put an end to entire mining crews. As a result, the dwarves that dare forge ahead and break new ground—often literally—are forced to be even tougher than the stone that surrounds them. These dwarves are the Abysswalkers, and are tasked to go where none have gone before so that others may follow safely in their footsteps.

 Abysswalkers often die young, giving their lives to protect the community. As such, they are highly respected by their fellow dwarves. Should they live long enough, Abysswalkers often become leaders or sages of the clan. Dwarven children are tested early for their potential to become Abysswalkers, and it is considered the highest honor to be selected as one.

 A special job requires special tools, and Abysswalkers make use of a variety of magical and cleverly designed items to protect themselves from the hazards of the deep. Most are also clad in protective suits that allow them to breathe even when the air is toxic.
