Tanuki are mischievous fey who physically resemble a mix between a raccoon and a small dog. Tanuki have a jolly disposition and disproportionately large testicles that make them appear comical and non-threatening. The tanuki, however, use these perceptions to their advantage in order to play tricks and take what they want from their targets. Their testicles are the source of their magic, which they use as spellcasting foci, particularly for the purposes of shapeshifting. Most of the time, tanuki take satisfaction and joy from playing harmless pranks on others. Their charisma and ingenuity make them capable of much more, and occasionally, other creatures will form alliances with the tanuki to use them as scouts, spies, and informants. A tanuki is happy to be compensated for this work with ample fresh fruit and fine alcohol for drinking.

For inexplicable reasons, tanuki seem to stumble upon fortune wherever they go, usually in the form of coins or jewellery that have been lost along roads or hidden and then forgotten. Tanuki delight in these serendipitous discoveries and are happy to collect small fortunes in packs that they carry on their backs, however they generally have little practical interest in the treasure and instead prefer to leave bits and pieces behind after their antics as playful acknowledgements of their involvement. A farmer whose scarecrow has been dressed in ridiculous clothing, for example, is likely to find a single gold coin left on the ground nearby.
